Albuquerque East Mountains Area

The towns of Edgewood and Cedar Crest area only 20 minutes outside of Albuquerque on one of the longest stretches of original Route 66 where the mountains meet the plains. They are the perfect places to stay while visiting Albuquerque and Santa Fe, where you will enjoy the less-hectic life of a small town.

Wildlife West is a refuge for animals that are unable to be re-released into the wild. It is a 122-acre site exhibiting local vegetation and wildlife. Wildlife West hosts music festivals and chuck wagon dinners along with local educational programs and activities.

tinkertown museumTinkertown Museum is located at the base of the Sandia Mountains and houses Ross. J. Ward's life work of renowned folk art. It took Ross Ward over forty years to carve, collect and lovingly construct what is now Tinkertown Museum. His miniature wood-carved figures were first part of a traveling exhibit, driven to county fairs and carnivals in the 1960's and 70's. Today, over 50,000 glass bottles form rambling walls that surround a 22 room museum. Inside discover the magic of animation. A raucous little western town, diminutive circus performers under the big top, and life at the Monarch Hotel are only a few of the multiple attractions. It's open daily 9AM to 6PM April 1st to November 1st.

salinas missionsSalinas Missions National Monument is located south of Edgewood and consists of multiple pueblo sites. Leaving from Edgewood you will first find Quarai which was a thriving pueblo when Onate first approached it in 1598. The site has a museum and the excavated ruins of the church and convento of Nuestra and cemetery. The second site is the Mission of San Gregorio de Abo. The tall ruins of the mission now speak of the solitude of the area, but was a thriving pueblo is 1581 and traded with people of the Acoma-Zuni area, Galisteo Basin, and the plains. The third site is Gran Quivira further south than the other two and the largest of the Salinas pueblos.

Horseback trips from one to five hours are available with a local guide that will take you into the Sandia Wilderness among the Ponderosa Pines with views of the plains and hills below.

Soar above the plains on a glider flight and harness Mother Nature's energy as you rise on silent wings. The New Mexican desert terrain, prominent mountain ranges, and dry, sunny climate combine to create the best soaring conditions in the world. You can take a basic flight, high performance, or the thrillseeker aerobatic. Flight instruction is also available.

paa-ko golf courseAcclaimed by many as the best golf course they ever played! The Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Course was designed by award winning architect Key Dye best known for his renowned Pinon Hills Golf Course in Farmington. The golf course is situated in the natural beauty of the Sandia Mountains. If you love to golf this in one course you just have to play!

Edgewood and Cedar Crest are located between the Cibola and Manzano National Forests where there are abundant hiking trails, picnic areas, and camping.

Albuquerque & Surrounding Area

Albuquerque Balloon FestivalThe largest city in New Mexico, Albuquerque still retains an old-world charm. Located in the center of the state, the city provides a gateway for travelers, especially those arriving into the international airport.

Known as the Heart of New Mexico, Albuquerque offers a taste of everything. Outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers can take advantage of two miles of trails, departing from the Rio Grande Nature Center and traveling along the river. A state-of-the-art aquarium adjoins the Botanical Garden along the river's edge in the bosque, where the cottonwoods and red willows provide shade and shelter for wildlife in the center of town. The Sandia and Manzano mountains frame the city's east and southern boundaries.

dining in AlbuquerqueSip a drink al fresco at the Old Town Plaza. Take the world's longest, single-span, aerial tramway up to Sandia Peak for an 11,000-square-mile panorama. Travel down Old Route 66 with a stop at historic Kimo Theatre. View more than 1,000 hot air balloons at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta each fall. Want to know how to access hiking trails, when to view wildlife on the bosque, or the best way to do the Balloon Fiesta? Ask your bed and breakfast innkeeper, of course!

The Church of San Felipe de Neri overlooks the central place of Old Town Albuquerque, where visitors rest before exploring the 130 shops, galleries and restaurants on the narrow back streets.

Explore 4.6 billion years of history at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. Then see the contemporary and traditional history and art exhibitions at the nearby Albuquerque Museum. Your bed and breakfast innkeeper will explain why you should save time for Explora!, the science center and children's museum.

petroglyphsYour innkeeper might advise you to view the 15,000 petroglyphs at Petroglyph National Monument in the late afternoon or early morning, and to take the ranger-guided tours. Another must-see is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, owned and operated by the 19 pueblo tribes of New Mexico. Just 60 miles west of Albuquerque is the Pueblo of Acoma. Located on a 365-foot mesa, the "Sky City" is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States.

Take the Turquoise Trail Scenic Byway and travel through the mountains from Cedar Crest north to Santa Fe through the mining towns of Golden, Madrid, and Cerrillos, now alive with arts, museums, and restaurants.
